Weekend Box Office: An ‘Abominable’ Weekend at ‘Downton Abbey’

Image
As I’m sure you’ve realized by now, the weekend is over. Which means it’s time to tally up the weekend box office and see which movies came out ahead, and which sank like a stone. The weekend’s big winner was  Abominable , an animated pic from Universal. Second place went to the tea-drinking inhabitants of  Downton Abbey , a film that held strong in its second week of release. Meanwhile, both  Hustlers and  It Chapter Two are still holding strong. All in all, no one had a bad weekend at the box office. Unless you hate every single movie playing right now, in which case,  you had a pretty bad weekend. Sorry. Never underestimate the power of a pretty-looking animated film.  Abominable , yet another computer-animated movie about a Yeti (remember  Smallfoot , anyone?), ended up at the top of the box office over the weekend, taking in $20.85 million. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but it’s worth noting the film cost about $75 million to make. Which means it still needs to pull in some d

‘The Wolf Hour’ Trailer: Naomi Watts Refuses to Leave Her Apartment In the Wild New York Summer of ’77

Image
The Wolf Hour played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and even though I was at the fest, I didn’t hear a single thing about it. Indeed, this movie wasn’t on my radar at all – until now. The first trailer for the movie just dropped, and it looks fantastic. Set in New York City during the sweltering summer of 1977 – when a blackout plunged the Big Apple into darkness, and the Son of Sam was stalking the streets –  The Wolf Hour has Naomi Watts as an agoraphobic novelist slowly coming unraveled as she hides out in her dingy apartment. Watch  The Wolf Hour trailer below. The Wolf Hour Trailer Part of my job involves watching a  lot of trailers. After a while, you begin to notice patterns. Boring, rote patterns, as if all the trailer editors have gotten together and made a pact to cut everything to fit a certain style. It can get tiresome. But every now and then, a trailer will come along and knock me on my ass. The film the trailer is advertising might end up being a bust –

‘The Other Lamb’ is a Beguiling and Rebellious Tale of Female Oppression [Fantastic Fest 2019]

Image
In Christianity, the lamb is symbolic of gentleness, innocence, and purity. The animal has also been used as a reference to Jesus Christ when the bible mentions “lamb of God.” There is a softness and delicate nature to the lamb, one that provides comfort in its shed fur used for blankets and clothing. They also possess a specific loyalty and obedience as they are willfully herded by a shepherd–blindly following its master even to its death. This thematic symbolism is woven throughout director Malgorzata Szumowska ’s horror film, The Other Lamb , as she depicts a tale of obedience and defiance within the isolated world of a cult. Dressed in a modest blue dress, Selah ( Raffey Cassidy ) is one of the daughters of a man known as Shepherd ( Michiel Huisman ). He leads a group of daughters and wives deep within the forest, living off the land and his empty promises of grace. The self-sufficiency of his female followers (or “flock”) is quickly established as they do all of their laundry, h

Image
T he Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows. Awesome Full Trailer for Prequel 'The King's Man' with Ralph Fiennes

Image
"While governments wait for orders, our people take action." 20th Century Fox has debuted the main full-length trailer for The King's Man , an exciting new prequel movie in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman series. The first teaser dropped in the summer, but this official trailer is even better. Damn this looks awesome! Once again directed by Matthew Vaughn, in this one we go back to the days of World War I, aka The Great War, to tell the origin story of "the very first independent intelligence agency." Taron Egerton as Eggsy isn't in this one, it's a whole new cast. Featuring an outstanding set of actors. Ralph Fiennes headlines, along with Gemma Arterton , Rhys Ifans , Matthew Goode , Tom Hollander , Harris Dickinson , Daniel Brühl , plus Djimon Hounsou , and Charles Dance . The more footage we see, the more impressed I am by this. Looking great so far! All the action seems thrilling in addition to the distinct look & feel of the film. Here's

‘The Long Walk’ Stares Death in the Face and Refuses to Look Away [Fantastic Fest 2019]

Image
It’s no secret how collective audiences view cinema, any genre, as an escape. This leads to “Hollywoodized” representations of fantastical storybook livelihoods and blind eyes turned to inescapable hardships. Foreign filmmakers like Mattie Do aren’t beholden to such candy-coating at this year’s Fantastic Fest , which allows movies like The Long Walk to express more honesty and earnestness. Do stares death in the face and refuses to look away when ugliness or depression rears forward. Mortality is a blessing and a curse, which should be embraced on both fronts. Bless expressionism that tips the scale both ways, making for a haunting meditation on loss that’s blunt, bleak, and so much better for acknowledging – nay, waltzing step-for-step with – the darkness of finality. In a small Laotian village, not far from modernization, exists a stretch of road where souls stroll freely. An old man ( Yannawoutthi Chanthalungsy ) is “gifted” the power to communicate with these spirits who’ve yet
