Trivia: ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Almost Had Two Other Younger Siblings in the Movie

Image
If you like the classic 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , here’s a bit of trivia that’s been available for a while but may not be widely known, even among the film’s big fans. John Hughes ‘ classic comedy features a rivalry between Ferris Bueller ( Matthew Broderick ) and his sister Jeanie ( Jennifer Grey ). Since Ferris is babied by their parents, Jeanie has it out for him and can’t get over the fact that he gets to stay home sick, knowing full well that he’s faking his illness to play hooky. But there were almost two other Bueller siblings in the movie, a 7-year old brother named Todd and a 12-year old sister named Kimberly. The two are prominently featured in the film’s script, but in the movie, you’ll only find background evidence of their existence. We’re circling back around to this bit of trivia because legendary editor Paul Hirsch , who worked on Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back , recently mentioned it on the Light the Fuse podcast while talking about

Trent Reznor Really, Really Hated Working on ‘Bird Box’

Image
Last year,  Bird Box  became Netflix’s biggest hit movie, setting the streaming giant’s seven-day records and inspiring dangerous memes. The film, which stars Sandra Bullock , takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has been overrun by monsters that cause people who look directly at them to kill themselves. For a movie that’s all about sight (or lack thereof),  Bird Box would have to rely heavily on sound. But one of the key composers behind that sound, Trent Reznor , who composed the  Bird Box  score alongside his frequent collaborator Atticus Ross , was not very happy with his experience working on the Netflix film. In a candid interview with  Revolver , Reznor called his experience on  Bird Box “a fucking waste of time.” The musician, whose frequent collaborations with Atticus Ross have won acclaim and a Best Original Score Oscar for their work on David Fincher’s  The Social Network , did not mince words when looking back at his time working on  Bird Box . “When we got i

A Black-and-White Version of ‘Parasite’ is Coming in 2020

Image
It’s been a banner year for Bong Joon-ho and his genre-defying masterwork Parasite . Since winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year,  Parasite has taken the world by storm, skyrocketing to the top of dozens of best of the year lists and even a few best of the decade lists (including ours ). Now  Parasite will head into 2020 with another achievement under its belt: a black-and-white release. Following in the footsteps of recent genre films that became unlikely critical darlings like  Mad Max: Fury Road and Logan ,  Parasite is getting a black-and-white release. According to The Film Stage , the  Parasite  black and white version of the film will be premiering at International Film Festival Rotterdam, which begins January 22, 2020 . It’s not yet known whether this black-and-white version will eventually make its way to theaters or if it will appear on the home video releases of  Parasite . Bong has long held a fascination with the black and white film, premiering a bla

Hasbro Buys Entertainment One, So ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘PJ Masks’ Movies May Be on the Way

Image
The toy company Hasbro has been comfortable turning some of their valuable properties like Transformers, G.I. Joe, Battleship, and Ouija into major motion pictures at Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. But it seems like the toymaker is looking to start making its own movies and expanding its licensing agreements at the same time thanks to a merger deal that recently closed with the independent Canadian studio Entertainment One . The Hollywood Reporter has news that the $3.8 billion merger between Hasbro and eOne has closed after the deal was first announced back in August. The new deal gives Hasbro the rights to extremely popular eOne-produced children’s properties like Peppa Pig and PJ Masks . Though Hasbro is probably a little more keen on the licensing revenues from eOne’s properties, we wouldn’t be surprised to see those animated shows turned into movies at some point. Plus, Hasbro can now use eOne as their own production banner. eOne has had their hand in producing

‘1917’ Co-Writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns on Crafting the One-Shot War Epic [Interview]

Image
1917  is a masterful piece of craftsmanship. Sam Mendes ‘ one-shot epic takes a forward-thinking approach to its depiction of World War I, which is an almost apocalyptic vision. It’s a rare vision, too, in which the camerawork and technique are noticeable yet don’t detract from the experience. To write the ambitious war movie, Mendes called  Krysty Wilson-Cairns , who was a writer on the Mendes-produced  Penny Dreadful  and recently co-wrote Edgar Wright’s next film,  Last Night in Soho. Over the last few years, Mendes and Wilson-Cairns collaborated and wrote a handful of scripts together, but for one reason or another, they never became movies. After what they’ve accomplished with  1917 , we can only imagine what they could’ve done together sooner. They aimed high and didn’t miss their target on this one. Recently, Wilson-Cairns told us about the earliest ideas for  1917 , influential war poetry, and the advantages of writing a one-shot movie. [Warning: this Q&A contains spoiler

Sleepy Skunk’s Movie Trailer Mash-Up of the Decade Aside from the crisp editing on display here, what’s most fun from this decade round-up are all the movies that I had completely forgotten about. But here they are, existing in the mash-up. But more importantly, this reminds me how many incredible, moving, hilarious, stunning and memorable moments there have been o
