Watch: Everyone Plays a Part in Fun Animated Short 'Drawn Closer'

Image
"The curtain only goes up when everyone has a part to play." It's showtime! Drawn Closer is an adorable animated short film made by the animation house Nexus Studios. It was made as an advertising project for Cox Communications, telling the story of a middle school drama department putting on a play - with some last minute changes. This story was "reimagined" as this animated short film after the pandemic cancelled Thurman White Middle School's play, but they got all the actual students involved to make this and it's just delightful. The short is written and directed by Oscar-winning animation filmmaker Patrick Osborne - of the acclaimed shorts Feast and Pearl previously, who is now working at Nexus Studios. This is just a feel-good bite-size ad, but it's the kind of feel-good filmmaking we always need more of these days. Watch below. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this short. David Lynch’s ‘Dune’ Getting 4K Release From Arrow Video

Image
Denis Villeneuve’s  Dune is arriving later this year, but the  Arrival director isn’t the first person to tackle Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi epic. In 1984, David Lynch helmed a film adaptation of  Dune , too – and it didn’t go so well. Lynch’s take on the tale was a box office bomb, and Lynch himself has disowned the film due to studio interference. But while Lynch may not be a fan of the film, his  Dune has developed a big cult following over the years. And now, the folks at Arrow Video are releasing the film on 4K. The sleeper has awakened and Arrow Video is gearing up to release David Lynch’s  Dune on 4K Blu-ray. The new Blu-ray will be released in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, and features two different versions: a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Steelbook Edition. And that’s pretty darn exciting, gang. Lynch’s  Dune is a bit messy, but it’s also a fascinating adaptation, and despite interference, Lynch’s voice still comes through. Bringing  Dune to the

Image
"Most people like sunsets… I love the sunrise." When a self-destructive teen is suspended from school and asked to look after his feisty alcoholic grandmother as a punishment, the crazy time they spend together turns his life around. Charlotte Rampling also stars, along with Marton Csokas and Edith Poor . This definitely looks like a feisty little film about the challenges of life, including how to deal with your own family. Rampling looks like she's at the top of her game here, a complex role with many layers. I'm surprised this hasn't shown up at any film festivals, it this seems like the perfect film for a festival audience. Here's

‘Paddington 2’ is No Longer the Best Reviewed Movie of All Time on Rotten Tomatoes

Image
Back in January of 2018, the family film sequel Paddington 2 became the best reviewed movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. With 163 reviews from critics (at the time), the movie managed to maintain a 100% score. Even in the years since then, the movie reached over 240 reviews and kept a perfect rating. That’s no easy feat when there’s so much subjectivity involved in film criticism. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, because a recently posted negative review has ruined the 100% critical rating that Paddington 2 earned, and the movie is no longer at the top of the pack. The Hollywood Reporter points out that the Rotten Tomatoes score for Paddington 2 dropped to 99% when a new review by critic Eddie Harrison was posted to Film Authority . Here’s a snippet of the scathing take that lashed out at the beloved family film: “This is not my Paddington Bear, but a sinister, malevolent imposter who should be shot into space, or nuked from space at the first opportuni

This Week In Trailers: Two Gods, Ailey, The Justice of Bunny King, Chasing Childhood

Image
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, we care for the dead, over-schedule the kids, learn how to use our bodies to express ourselves, and try to make it in the world today with everything we’ve got. Two Gods Director Zeshawn Ali’s debut documentary looks celestial. In an area of Newark, NJ, where too many funerals commemorate tragically short lives, Hanif, an older man with a troubled past, works as a casket maker and ritual body washer. He is committed to his work and to his Islamic faith and is also a dedicated mentor to two local kids—Furquan, a confident 12-year-old who comes from a rough home and Naz, a 17-year-old who has been fighting through his
