Paramount Pictures Pulls ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ from September Release Due to Rising COVID-19 Concerns

Image
Clifford the Big Red Dog has been sitting around like a good boy waiting to be unleashed in theaters in September. Unfortunately, the rising cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 has Paramount Pictures reconsidering a theatrical release for the family friendly film. The studio has pulled Clifford the Big Red Dog from their release calendar with families feeling less likely to attend theaters, especially in larger markets like Los Angeles and New York City. Deadline has word on Clifford the Big Red Dog being pulled from the previously set theatrical release of September 17, 2021 . That’s a month and a half away, so this is quite the preemptive move, but it’s based on the rise of coronavirus cases thanks to the Delta variant that’s much more contagious. This is especially surprising since the movie was tracking well with audiences ahead of the film’s release, but clearly the studio thinks things are going to get worse before they get better (again). Clifford the Big Red Dog was

The Daily Stream: ‘Pete’s Dragon’ (1977) is a Fascinating and Surprisingly Mean Disney Oddity

Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream , an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching, why it’s worth checking out, and where you can stream it.) The Movie : Pete’s Dragon (1977) Where You Can Stream It : Disney+ The Pitch : It’s a Disney movie about an abused boy with a not-so-imaginary dragon friend being chased by a family of cruel hillbillies who want to make him their personal slave. If that doesn’t sell you on giving this one a shot, nothing will. Why It’s Essential Viewing : Pete’s Dragon showcases a fascinating moment in time for the Mouse House. It’s a live action/animation hybrid that technologically paved the way for Who Framed Roger Rabbit a decade later. It was made at a time when many of the old guard at Disney were either gone or on their way out, the beginning of a dark period for this particular studio that would end with the second Golden Era, officially kicked off by 1989’s The Little Mermaid . The late ’70s to early ’80s was a fascinati

Women in Film, ReFrame, and Time’s Up Call Disney Out for Its Abhorrent Attack of Scarlett Johansson in Legal Battle

Image
Scarlett Johansson has been all over the news lately because she decided to stand up to the largest media corporation on the planet. Johansson alleges that her contract was breached by the decision to release Black Widow to Disney+ before giving it a proper theatrical release. Regardless of how strong her case may or may not be, Disney executives responded with personal, misogynistic attacks against her character.  Now, Women in Film, ReFrame, and Time’s Up have come together to release a statement condemning this behavior and the company’s grievous treatment of Johansson. And they’re right to do so. The Situation So Far Variety , The Hollywood Reporter , and Reuters have all given very concise breakdowns of Johansson’s lawsuit and the strength of her case against Disney. I encourage you to read them as, unfortunately, there just isn’t enough space to run through every detail and still get to the point of this article.  That said, the TL;DR is that Johansson is suing Disney fo

‘Borderlands’ Villain Edgar Ramirez Teases a Film Adaptation That Matches the Games

Image
Borderlands is batsh*t crazy and that’s why we love it. It’s a heightened post-apocalyptic world where your guns can not only talk to you, they can be reloaded by throwing them like an explosive grenade. There’s a lot of questions about just how all that will translate to the big screen, but now we have some inside intel from one of its stars that suggests the movie isn’t gonna get all serious on us. The charm of Borderlands as a gameplay experience is in the absurdity. Every character you meet is beyond nuts. I mean, there’s a pivotal character in the second game that is a hyper, foul-mouthed, sociopathic pre-teen explosives expert named Tiny Tina . That’s the kind of random fun that has made Borderlands a gamer favorite. We have a movie adaptation coming up with a decent pedigree behind it. Eli Roth directs from a script by Craig Mazin , his follow-up project to the award-winning Chernobyl by the way, and the cast is packed with bangers like Jamie Lee Curtis , Jack Black , K

Ain’t Them Bodies (Decapitated) Saints: Director David Lowery on a Scene From ‘The Green Knight’

Image
What do a decapitated Christian saint and the 1984  Star Wars TV movie  Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure  have in common? They were both influences on writer-director David Lowery , whose commentary in a new video explains how these two seemingly disparate things came together to inform a scene in his new movie  The Green Knight , in theaters this weekend. The New York Times has posted an “Anatomy of a Scene” video in which Lowery walks you through a full five-minute scene from The Green Knight , unpacking the various influences at play. Note that this video is somewhat confusingly labeled: it says, “Take a Journey with Dev Patel ,” but it’s Lowery who provides the commentary. Patel is the star of the film; he plays Gawain in this adaptation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight . However, you won’t see him (or much of anything) at first because the scene starts out shrouded in darkness in a cottage in the countryside. Saint Winifred in The Green Knight Lowery’s breakthrough

Disney’s Latest ‘Jungle Cruise’ Clip Has Some Indiana Jones Vibes

Image
Viewers who are entertaining the idea of embarking on a  Jungle Cruise this weekend may want to know what’s in store for them. Disney’s live-action adaptation of its Jungle Cruise theme park ride hits theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 30 . Now, the studio has released a new 4-minute clip which gives us our best look yet at what you can expect should you decide to board the riverboat with  Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Jungle Cruise  has earned mixed-to-positive reviews; our own review  called it a “decent adventure that owes a lot to other films.” Specifically, it has drawn comparisons to adventure films like The Mummy and Romancing the Stone, along with other live-action Disney features like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Another major source of inspiration for both the ride and the movie is  The African Queen , the 1951 classic starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Yet it’s really  Raiders of the Lost Ark that the clip below b
