Adam Sandler Could Star in the Next Safdie Brothers Movie

Image
For the past decade, Adam Sandler  has made a name for himself as a goofball movie star who makes movies solely for the purpose of earning him a trip to Hawaii. But every now and then, we get reminded — hey, this guy is actually a great actor. After giving a quietly stunning performance in last year’s  The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) , Sandler may be ready for a new creative comeback. Sandler is reportedly being eyed by the Safdie brothers for their follow-up film to  Good Time . That’s right, an Adam Sandler Safdie brothers movie may soon be on its way. Ben and Joshua Safdie have slowly become some of the most exciting, visceral independent directors in Hollywood. And no film demonstrated it better than last year’s brutal, discomfiting crime thriller  Good Time , starring  Robert Pattinson  as a bank robber attempting to get his disabled brother (Ben Safdie) out of prison. It’s an astonishingly pulpy film that marked another turning point in Pattinson’s career from hear

‘True Detective’ Season 3 is Losing Director Jeremy Saulnier Earlier Than Expected

Image
True Detective fans have been anticipating a redeeming third season for the crime thriller series after a rushed, disappointing second season couldn’t live up to the greatness of the first season, made great by the writing of Nic Pizzolatto and the direction of Cary Fukunaga. The hiring of Green Room and Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier gave us hope that True Detective would return to form, but it appears there may have been some trouble on set, resulting in the director leaving before finishing all his episodes. Variety has word on Jeremy Saulnier leaving True Detective season three after completing the first two episodes of the third season. The filmmaker was initially hired to direct the first three episodes, and now veteran TV director Daniel Sackheim is stepping behind the camera to take over where Saulnier left off, and he will be dividing the remaining six of eight total episodes with Nic Pizzolatto, who is making his directorial debut on the show this season. This Week In Trailers: And Then I Go, Duck Butter, Closer Than We Think, All or Nothing: The Dallas Cowboys

Image
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we try and connect with our troubled kid, make a one-night-stand a 24-hour stand, learn about a futurist that isn’t named Steve Jobs , and spend some time with the Dallas Cowboys.   And Then I Go This one is based on a book, Project X , but this is the most interesting line from Publisher’s Weekly about it: This engrossing novel gives the overworked subject of Columbine-style school massacres an unusually subtle and affecting treatment. Seen through that prism, you can see how the trailer, at least initially, seems like a cheesy family drama. As things progress, though, it’s just engrossing as the proverbial wheels

‘Beetlejuice’ Originally Had a Much Darker Ending

Image
Beetlejuice is on everyone’s mind lately due to the film’s 30th anniversary. While you’re reflecting back on Tim Burton ‘s 1988 dark comedy, here’s something you may not know: the film almost had a much darker ending. Read about the  Beetlejuice alternate ending below. Happy 30th birthday,  Beetlejuice – you don’t look a day over 29! In 1988, Tim Burton’s weird comedy became a hit, and its legacy lives on to this day. There were even plans for a sequel set in Hawaii (for some reason). But the  Beetlejuice legacy could’ve been much different had the film featured its original, alternate ending. Speaking with Yahoo ,  Beetlejuice producer Larry Wilson revealed the film originally ended with Winona Ryder ‘s goth-as-hell character Lydia  dying in a fire . As Wilson tells it, the idea was that the death would enable Lydia to join Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis ‘ ghost characters in the afterlife: “Our first ending was Lydia — she died in a fire and was able to join Barbara and Ada

Netflix Might Buy Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, the Company Behind ‘Taken’ and ‘Valerian’

With the Disney/Fox acquisition awaiting approval in Hollywood, it feels as if the studios are strengthening their troops in preparation for war. And the battle won’t be contained only to the remaining major studios – Disney has its own streaming service coming next year, so the competition is about to become a lot tougher for companies like Netflix. So what’s a streaming service to do in the face of such a looming giant? How about shoring up its own forces by acquiring a well-known independent movie studio? A Netflix EuropaCorp acquisition is reportedly in the works. Does this mean there’s a chance we see a sequel to  Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets after all? A French site called Capital (via The Playlist ) reports that Netflix is in “advanced talks” to acquire EuropaCorp, one of Europe’s biggest independent movie studios that was founded by French filmmaker Luc Besson . Nothing has been signed yet, but if the deal goes through, Besson would stay on as the major cre
